Welcome to "Tropical Ecosystems" through the Study Abroad program at Lower Columbia College. The course offers
you the opportunity to explore the ecology and diversity of the Belize barreir reef, second largest in the world. You
will also receive instruction in principles of ecology as reflected through study of this colorful and diverse Carribean carbonate
ecosystem. We will visit a mainland Belize Mayan site and observe the inalnd rainforest diversity along the way.
The course when taken for credit fulfills three credits of natural science distribution list requirement with lab. There are no prerequisites, but comfort in the water and a capacity for extended moderate physical activity is necessary for your safety and enjoyment.
SCHEDULE
December 9-17: Caribbean bound. That's "bound" as in all tied up! A journal is due at completion of trip.
OBJECTIVES
Identify representative verebrate, and invertebrate species comprising coral reef communities.
Discuss factors threatening survival of coral reef communities.
Examine the historical Mayan culture and interact with the ethnic cultures (Mestizo, Creole, Maya) represented today.
