1/27/00 Haiku about Light that the students wrote while we were making and learning to use sundials.

Light comes from the sun.
Light helps you see in the dark.
The light is process.

-Gail W.

The light starts to grow,
The sunrays become hotter
Until the evening.

-Patrick (P.D.)

The sun shines on us.
It shines on the earth with heat.
Light makes plants grow tall.

-Christal

STILL LIFE DRAWINGS: LIGHT AND SHADOW

March 8, 2000. A simple still life was set up, black bottle, gray cone, white block. Different forms of lighting were shown. Shadows, cast shadows, the light areas, middle gray areas were pointed out. The kids made a value scale of white to black with charcoal and then drew the still life. They were urged to use values from light to dark scale in their drawings.

MIGRATION OF SAND CRANES AS SIGN OF SPRING

We studied the migration of the sandhill cranes that rest, feed, and fatten by the thousands on the Platte River in Nebraska during March. It is an annual migration for the cranes who are heading to the far north to nest. The presence of the sandhill cranes is a sure sign of the approaching spring. After our study we made origami cranes.
