TESTS (Exams & Quizzes)
Testing is meant to be a measure of how you are doing and to be another learning tool. Tests are closed book.
Do not communicate with other students or consult textbooks during exams or quizzes, unless instructed to do so.
Place textbooks where they will not tempt you during tests. You may, however, refer to dictionaries, atlases, globes, maps, charts, specified handouts, and other instructional devices, such as models, that form a normal part of our classroom. Use of approved notes is permitted as indicated below. Please feel free to ask questions of the instructor or test proctor. This includes seeking clarification of test questions or other needs related to testing. Questions on tests may be multiple choice or written. In some cases oral questions may be asked. If you would prefer an alternate means of testing, ask ahead of time. Terminology is an important part of this course; tests results are, in part, a measure of your scientific vocabulary.
All tests must be turned in at or before the end of the testing period. They may not be taken out of the classroom. Completed tests can be reviewed in the classroom during the term (extra credit).
If you answered a question incorrectly, find out why! You may see that or similar questions again! Exams are cumulative, important concepts are interrelated and therefore important to understand and remember.
Keep your Scantron results from multiple choice quizzes and exams. Ignore the cumulative section of the Scantron results. It applies only to multiple choice.
HANDOUTS (Which can be used during tests?)
Keep your course handouts. Specified handouts, with your name, may be used on tests (quizzes and exams). A list of which handouts may be used will be posted on the front bulletin board.
NOTES (Can they be used during tests?)
You may, unless instructed otherwise, use instructor-approved notes on quizzes and exams but only with the following restrictions. Notes will be on 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper. For quizzes you may only use one side of one sheet of paper. For exams you may use both sides of one sheet of paper plus your quiz notes.
Notes can be written in longhand or printed from a computer. The use of diagrams is highly recommended. Notes may not be material reproduced on a copier, unless by prior approval. Your name should be on each sheet of notes. You may NOT use someone else's notes. You may be instructed to turn in your notes along with the test. If so, use a paperclip. Notes will be returned to you. You can edit, your notes, possibly for extra credit, and you will be able to reuse them, along with an additional page of notes during the final exam. Notes, and specified handouts, may only be used on late or makeup tests if they are turned in when arranging for the test.
LATE TEST (MAKE-UP TEST) POLICY
If you are ill, or have another good reason for missing an exam, let your instructor know ahead of time, or as soon as possible (call, you can always leave a message, or e-mail). Make-up tests are allowed at the instructor's discretion, depending in large part on whether you have a valid reason for missing a test. Make-up tests will normally be taken in the Learning Center, Main 128, where will need to show a photo ID and will not have access to all the materials available during the regularly scheduled test time. Check the posted hours of the Learning Center. Quizzes and exams should be available at the Learning Center the day after you have requested, in writing, and been granted a make-up test. Missed exams and quizzes must be arranged and made up within 1 week unless other arrangement have been made. Students late to an exam, or quiz, won't have as much time to complete it as students who are on time! Unscheduled or non-standard quizzes and tests (pop quizzes or slide quizzes) may not be made up. Contact instructor if you have any questions.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
You, the student, are responsible for your own education. Reading of all assigned material is essential to successfully complete this course. The assigned material is to be read before coming to class. Any problems of comprehension or organization should be immediately discussed with the instructor during class if appropriate, or during office hours, or at other times by arrangement. The student is responsible for all material presented in class, during laboratory periods (if applicable), in the text, or otherwise assigned. It is the student's responsibility to obtain any materials missed for any reason. You are responsible for keeping track of your own grades and points throughout the quarter. You may use these points to calculate your course grade at any time during the term.
Students are expected to maintain high standards of academic conduct and integrity.
A student may be subject to disciplinary action for acts of academic dishonesty.
See Student Rights & Responsibilities in the Student Handbook for more information.
Place packs, etc., where they will not present a tripping hazard.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Regular class attendance is desirable for students to accomplish the work necessary to successfully complete all courses. Failure to attend class could have a detrimental result on your grade. Student's are responsible for all material presented in class, and all announcements made in class and via e-mail. Absence from class does not relieve you of this responsibility. Attendance will not normally be taken in class.
In the event that the instructor cannot attend class the student should do the following:
check the course web page to see if there is an assignment, visit textbook's web site, use class time to read and study.
BEHAVIOR POLICY
Students are expected to maintain adult behavior at all times. Please be punctual. If you are late, please enter quickly and quietly without disturbing the class. Talking or any other behavior which disrupts the class or disturbs other students may result in your being asked to leave the room, change your seat, or withdraw from the course. Any behavior deemed disruptive and inappropriate for class will not be tolerated. You are expected to properly care for all equipment and materials in the classroom. DO NOT write on tables! Place packs, etc., where they will not present a tripping hazard.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY
It is the student's responsibility to formally withdraw from the class. The instructor is not responsible for withdrawing students. If you choose to stop coming to class, you must initiate the request and complete the withdrawal process through the Registration Office on or before the 35th day of instruction (Friday of the seventh week).
A student who officially withdraws from a course will receive a grade of "W". Failure to withdraw will usually result in a grade of "F". You should see your advisor prior to withdrawal.
