Cinder Cones are small volcanoes built by an accumulation of basaltic tephra. Usually there is a crater at the surface. Cinder cones are normally a few hundred meters tall (hundreds of feet). This example, Cinder Cone in Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California is about 210 meters (700 feet) high. Typically, they only have one period of activity, lasting about a decade or less.
