Image of the Week: December 19 - 25, 2004

Winter Officially Starts this Week!

The (winter) Solstice (northern hemisphere) occurs on
December 21, 2004 at 12:42 UT (4:42 A.M. PST).

Measurement of noon Sun angle

In the northern hemisphere the noon sun angle, as well as the length of daylight, has been decreasing since the September equinox (Sept. 22, 2004). On Sunday, December 19, a 12.0 inch ruler cast a 29.25 inch shadow.
This indicates a noon sun angle of 22 degrees above the horizon.
Compare this with the noon shadow on May 15, 2003 (click here).

For Monday, December 20, in Longview, WA the
length of daytime (Sun in the sky) is 8 hours 37 minutes, and
length of visible light (including twilight) is 9 hours 47 minutes.
