The (winter) Solstice (northern hemisphere) occurs on
December 21, 2004 at 12:42 UT (4:42 A.M. PST).

Leafless branches with a scrub jay

In the northern hemisphere length of daylight has been decreasing since the September equinox (Sept. 22, 2004). As a result, many broadleaf trees have shed their leaves in preparation for the cold days of winter.
