Darlingtonia californica
Cobra Lily
Carnivorous, or Insectivorous, Plants
Insects crawl under the translucent hood and fall into the vase-like leaves of this pitcher plant, where they die and are digested providing the plant with necessary nutrients. Darlingtonia live in wetlands' soils low in nutrients because they are developed on serpentinite.
