Measuring Sun Angle
How high in the sky is the Sun?

Measuring the angle of the sun, May 15, 2004

12:15 P.M. PDT, May 13, 2004, Lower Columbia College

The 12 inch ruler, held at a right angle by a block of wood,
casts a 6.7 inch shadow.

Trigonometry yields the answer.

Opposite side divided by adjacent side equals the tangent of the angle.

The opposite side is the ruler, 12.0 inches.

The adjacent side is the shadow of the ruler, 6.7 inches.

12.0/6.7 = 1.79045

This is the tangent of an angle of 60.8 degrees.
