Mount St. Helen's Dome Dacite

Mount St. Helen's Dome Dacite, November 4, 2004

Micrograph of the new dome's dacite shows somewhat larger crystals in a groundmass of glass and very small crystals. The larger crystals formed while the magma cooled more slowly deep underground.
The groundmass has formed at, or near, the surface and results from more rapid cooling.
