The Mineral Halite

Halite (NaCl) is an evaporite mineral,
it forms by evaportation of salt water.

Rock salt, the rock composed of halite,
is not generally common at Earth's surface due to its high solubility.
It is found only in very dry climates.
In the subsurface however, it is abundant in several locations.

These crystals of halite were grown by one of LCC's chemistry instructors.
