After studying the material of this chapter, you should be able to:
  1. Discuss the role of glaciers in the hydrologic cycle.
  2. List and describe the two basic types of glaciers and where they occur.
  3. Discuss the geographic extent of glaciers at present and earlier in the Cenozoic.
  4. Discuss the concept of glacial budget.
  5. Discuss the importance of glaciers as agents of erosion and deposition.
  6. Define rock deformation.
  7. Explain how glaciers move.
  8. Describe the features and landforms caused by glacial erosion.
  9. Describe the features and landforms caused by glacial deposition.
  10. Explain what an ice age is.
  11. Discuss the factors that possibly cause glaciations and compare them with those that cause times with few glaciers.
  12. Discuss some of the indirect effects of glaciers, and list some of the possible causes of glaciation.
