EXTRA CREDIT - 04W - Information for
David Cordero's Students in the Earth Sciences:
Earth Science, Geography, Geology, and Oceanography

Extra credit is NOT intended to give you points in lieu of doing the normal work expected of you.
It is meant to be additional work that will supplement the material you have been assigned.
It will hopefully increase your comprehension and enjoyment of the subject.
You may NOT earn extra credit if you fail to adequately complete your regular work.
You may earn extra credit up to a maximum of 60 points (~5% of total lecture points).

Extra credit may be earned by using the services of the Tutoring Center, if your scores indicate you might benefit from this.

Extra credit is DUE by Friday of the 10th week of the term.

Remember, in order to earn a term grade of A, B, or C you must have scored at least that high on one of your exams or on your quiz score average. So if you need to improve test scores, choose extra credit projects that are likely to do that.

EXTRA CREDIT is offered for several reasons.
It is hoped it will:

Provide you with an opportunity to pursue a subject of interest to you in more detail
Enable you to become better understand important concepts
Provide incentive for learning more about the subject matter of the earth science courses

If you have an idea for a worthwhile extra credit project and can justify it, let me know.

EXTRA CREDIT - Ideas

* Can only submit once per term for any items with an asterisk.

VOCABULARY - Correctly define a term from the textbook and use it in a sentence related to the chapter's subject matter - I'll choose 2 or 3 terms in class first thing on random days.
Computer WALLPAPER/BACKGROUND - Identify & relate, in writing, DC's Computer Desktop background to our course, the wallpaper could look like this SAMPLE of possible Wallpaper
TUTORING - Get tutoring related to our course, on a regular basis, if need for tutoring is indicated.

NEWS REPORT - Brief explanation & relationship to our course
PERIODICAL REPORT - Report on a non-fiction article directly related to our course
Suggestion for OCNG 140: Natural History, 11/03, "Trashed", p. 46
BOOK REPORT* - Report on a non-fiction work directly related to our course
LCC GEOLOGY in Literature - John McPhee
FIELD TRIP* - Report on preparation, field activities & relationship to our course. Include sources of information you used.

ON-LINE Extra Credit
Please be sure to include your name in all e-mail messages, especially if it is not obvious from your e-mail address. Also, please be sure and include a subject, preferably one that pertains to our course. (Or I might not read it.)
ON-LINE QUIZ* - E-mail me the results of your first practice on-line quiz from our textbook's web site.
Be sure to put your name in the message/subject, if it is not obvious from your e-mail address.
Extra WWW Assignments - Complete Internet assignments beyond those required for your course

WEB SITE EXPLORATION - E-mail me a summary of what you did (list the web sites including the URLs), where you found the sites (an LCC web page, textook web site, search engine, or other means), how the site relates to our course (be specific), what you learned from the site(s), how long you spent, and your evaluation of the site(s) - Was it interesting and helpful? Was the time spent worthwhile? Was this a good way, or even a better way, for you to learn the concepts covered? Points would vary, according to what you do and, to some extent, how well you did it - was it worth while etc.

CLASS PARTICIPATION - Asking and answering questions is an important part of learning. frequent and thoughtful class participation could result in extra credit.
