Change, at varying rates, is constantly taking place.

Mount St. Helens, Oct. 4, 2004

Processes within the various subsystems of the earth system
affect the global community (humans) at varying scales.
Within the last few weeks several examples of these dynamic processes
have caught the attention of people around the world
and have directly impacted large numbers of humans and other species on Earth.

Prominent recent examples of these processes include:
volcanism, earthquakes, and tropical storms.

The Earth Sciences are
Astronomy, Geology, Meteorology, and Oceanography
